Pasar Página 2008
bookRoom workshop at ‘Pasar Página’ conference at the MuVIM (Museo de la Ilustración y Modernidad) Valencia on Tuesday 16th December at 17.00
bookRoom will present and discuss our research project from the Arts and Humanities Research Council with the aim to create and manage a global research network concerned with the way photography, design and typography (and possibly other media) connect and collide on the page, both analogue and digital – with particular reference to artists books and magazines.
In order to discover what form this network should take we are holding a number of intimate (small) workshops at key events in different countries for invited guests to present ideas and works of interest.
Invited participants present a book or magazine or a work of art on the page work, either digital or analogue. Essentially this is simply to provoke debate about what might provide a framework, where we might locate the basis of the network and to find out if we have connections to explore through further collaboration.
Confirmed attendees at ‘Pasar Página’ conference are Sunil Gupta (Camerawork Delhi), Kathy Kubicki (Journal of Photography and Culture, UK), Pedro Vicente (Co-organizer of Pasar Página, independent curator and writer, Spain), Pep Benlloch (Universidad Politecnica de Valencia).
In Print 2007
Photography on the magazine page in print and on screen
A study day held on Tuesday 12th June 2007 at University College for the Creative Arts, Farnham
Photography has an intimate relationship with the magazine page that has rarely been investigated and certainly never been recorded as a history. The magazine page, both on and off the screen is a fleeting thing, around for a day, a week or a month (at most) it has to grab its viewer in a very different way than say the wall of a gallery or the pages of a book. Alfred Steiglitz’s magazine Camerawork was the first of its kind to foreground selected ‘art based photography’, London Illustrated News magazine was the first to tell documentary stories using photographs and texts. Today the number of magazines available is extraordinary in spite of the impact that the internet has had on the print media. So how can we begin to identify the interesting things that photography has done within the context of the magazine?
